CASE STUDY

Creating accessible online cultural experiences: Τhe case of Alpha Politismos

A few words

The Alpha Bank Group, one of the leading Groups of the financial sector in Greece, has fully embraced user-centered design practices across the development of digital innovative products and services. In addition, Alpha Bank plays an active role in the cultural life of the country and supports relevant initiatives and activities. The digital property «Alpha Politismos» includes information such as collections and archives, exhibitions, publications, and educational programs, and also features an e-shop.

The challenge

The main challenge was to redesign and create a brand new “Alpha Politismos” website and e-shop according to the latest standards of Human-Centered Design, UX principles and Web Accessibility.

Our approach

We were involved in the project as Web and Digital Accessibility experts. First, we proposed, created and delivered a custom training program for the product development teams on the Web Accessibility guidelines, practices, and technologies. We believe that this is a key activity for all the stakeholders to be aligned. It was proved that training practically affected and raised the quality of the design and development process.

In parallel, we applied our holistic methodology that combines a series of accessibility audits, rounds of remediation and usability tests with users with disabilities.

Main outcomes

We delivered a training program on Web Accessibility to more than 18 professionals involved in the project, designers, developers, content designers, museum collection curators etc. The training sessions produced fruitful discussions and learning outcomes that paved the way for a successful remediation process.

We identified, analyzed and remediated 62 accessibility problems that affected users with visual, motor and cognitive disabilities.

After two rounds of audits and remediation, we run several usability testing sessions with users with disabilities. These people showed their enthusiasm about the new accessible experience.

-             “ A very pleasant experience and navigation, plus I didn’t face problems like the usual ones with other sites and e-shops”.

-             “I was surprised by the quality of the work, the description of the images, and the application process was accessible”.

-             “I can find the information I want, the whole structure and navigation are easy”.

Alpha Politismos was the first website (and e-shop) related to culture and museums in Greece that was developed according to the 8-stage web accessibility methodology proposed by theUXProdigy.
